Degree Overview

This rigorous program will prepare you to serve on the front lines of health care and take on the daily challenges of a rewarding career caring for others.

CUC’s program stands apart from the rest with:

  • High-impact, simulated patient scenarios for advancing real-world learning and practice.
  • Advanced practice nursing faculty who educate from “both sides of the bed”—teaching from the perspective of both bedside nurses and primary care providers.
  • CUC’s Lutheran, Christian foundation that values individuals as members of God’s creation, unique and blessed with inherent worth. The University embraces the true meaning of vocation—your calling in life.
  • A unique curriculum prepares you to think critically, build resilience, act professionally and advocate responsibly.
  • Individual attention: boutique-sized program allows for continued one-on-one instruction beyond the initial years of smaller classes.

Through robust theoretical and experiential learning, students will meet the eligibility requirements necessary to successfully gain licensure as a registered nurse generalist through completion of the National Council State Board of Nursing Examination (NCLEX-RN). Upon successful completion of the NCLEX, CUC nurse alumni will be prepared to assume the role of the registered nurse and help enhance the profession by becoming future nurse leaders.

Mission

The Concordia University Chicago Nursing program will prepare students for professional practice through academic rigor, accountability, integrity and excellence with a foundation of ethical decision-making and service to others that regards the inherent worth of all people.

Purpose

The purpose of the BSN program will be to prepare students to think critically, communicate effectively, work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, and perform indicated therapeutic nursing interventions safely while applying an ethical perspective to decision making that regards the individual beliefs, values and customs of each person.

Lab Facilities

Concordia-Chicago’s brand-new Nursing Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art 4,500-square-foot modern facility dedicated to providing real-world learning opportunities that mirror those seen in the hospital setting.

The contemporary simulation and instruction lab is designed with four distinct learning spaces:

  • Skills attainment lab
  • Multispecialty intensive care spaces
  • Health assessment learning center
  • Simulated home environment

Each space is complete with lifelike patient simulators, realistic practice models and hospital-grade equipment, offering ample opportunity to practice and develop your nursing skills before and while being immersed in a clinical rotation.

A History of Success

Concordia-Chicago has a long history of participating in the education of Chicago-area nurses, with more than 1,000 graduates since 1982. Previous nursing degrees were offered jointly with other area universities and academic medical centers, which provided a majority of the nursing-focused coursework.

The University’s rich partnership history, paired with its exceptional new facilities and outstanding faculty, has allowed CUC to develop this four-year program that will ensure a seamless learning experience for students as they complete their BSN degrees.

Interprofessional Practice Partnership

River Forest Fire Department: Our official practice partnership with the River Forest Fire Department allows for unique and innovative interprofessional collaborative learning. This relationship has grown beyond CPR skills attainment to a true collaborative partnership that enhances learning in the care of the adult, pregnant patient, pediatric patient, in end-of-life care situations and in emergent care in the community and hospital setting. Additionally, this collaboration has provided an opportunity for the nursing faculty and their firefighter/paramedic counterparts to work together in the development of the ENVISION summer nursing camp for pre-college age students.

Nursing is a unique, practice-oriented discipline that meets a societal goal. The science of nursing is concerned with critical thinking, problem solving and the application of knowledge. The art of nursing involves combining the science of nursing knowledge with interacting, caring and valuing. The Concordia University Chicago BSN Program has developed student learning outcomes to create a strong foundation for practice-ready nurse graduates.

  1. Demonstrate the core values of the University and LCMS by assuming responsibility and accountability for practice, by providing safe person-centered care that is respectful of the diversity of the human experience.
  2. 3. Promote, provide, and collaborate in evidence-based, safe, person-centered care to individuals, families, and communities that is inclusive of diverse populations.
  4. Incorporate the skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, negotiation, teaching and advocacy while participating in Interprofessional healthcare team.
  5. Demonstrate management and leadership principles in complex health care systems that incorporates the art and science of nursing and promotes the collaboration with internal and external healthcare stakeholders.
  6. Competently utilize technology and health information resources for self, colleagues, individuals, families, groups, and communities.
  7. Demonstrate accountability for formal and informal experiences that promote both personal and professional growth and lifelong learning.

The BSN program is currently in the process of seeking accreditation from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Status information is available on the University's Consumer Information page, under the Accreditation tab.
