Concordia University Chicago (CUC) announces that Dr. Richard Fischer, the esteemed Fred and Jane Wittlinger Endowed Chair for Music Performance, will retire on Dec. 31, 2025, after more than 51 years as the University’s Director of Bands.
Affectionately known as “Doc” Fischer by generations of students and colleagues, he has been a guiding force in music education at CUC, conducting the Wind Symphony and University Band with unwavering passion. Through his leadership, countless students have formed a lifelong connection to music. Fortunately, he will continue to do so in his official capacity through the end of this calendar year, leading the Wind Symphony on its upcoming spring tour through Michigan and Indiana, as well as performances at the home concert, Patriotic Pops concert, fall tour, Christmas concert, and more.
A distinguished educator and accomplished musician, Dr. Fischer holds degrees from DePaul University and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University, where he studied under Eugene Corporon. Under his direction, the Wind Symphony has earned a national and international reputation for excellence, performing across the United States and in Canada, Europe, Asia and South Africa. Their celebrated appearances at venues such as Carnegie Hall and participation in esteemed conferences, including the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) and the Illinois Music Educators Conference (ILMEA), have solidified the ensemble’s status as one of the finest in its class. His commitment to commissioning and premiering new wind band compositions has further enriched the field of music education.
“Farther back than most people on campus can remember, Doc Fischer has been teaching, motivating, and inspiring young musicians at Concordia-Chicago. Keeping Christ at the center, he feeds students’ hearts and minds with passion and excellence,” said Dr. Russell Dawn, president of Concordia University Chicago. “After next year, Doc’s everyday presence will be missed, but his positive impact will be deeply felt by all who have learned from him.”
Beyond Concordia-Chicago, Dr. Fischer’s expertise is recognized globally. He has served as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator on multiple continents, sharing his knowledge and passion with musicians and educators alike. His leadership of the LCMS Youth Gathering Wind Symphony on numerous occasions is a testament to his dedication to inspiring faith through music.
Dr. Fischer’s legacy will endure for generations, not only through his numerous publications and recordings with the Wind Symphony but also through the lives of the students and colleagues he has mentored.
The University invites the Concordia-Chicago community to celebrate Dr. Fischer’s remarkable career throughout the next year.
