SciGirls event at Concordia-Chicago trains educators to engage girls in science

Concordia University Chicago will host SciGirls CONNECT Leader Training on Saturday, Aug. 12. This half-day of training for K-12 and pre-service (formal, community or out-of-school time) science educators provides an opportunity to learn and practice the SciGirls education philosophy through fun, hands-on learning activities. It is part of a broader national outreach effort to help educators adopt new, evidence-based strategies to engage girls in STEM fields.

Concordia-Chicago students and faculty develop Biblical Greek app

A team of Concordia University Chicago students and faculty has developed, programmed and released a smartphone app for students learning New Testament Greek, with plans to develop similar apps for Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic. Verb parsing, or identifying verb forms, is a basic skill for learning to use the Biblical languages. The project was a cooperative effort between Dr. Andrew Steinmann, distinguished professor of theology and Hebrew, Dr. Victor Govindaswamy, associate professor of computer science, and their students.

"Popular Music for Piano" summer camp offered at Concordia-Chicago

Students entering grades 6 through 12 are invited to participate in the “Popular Music for Piano” summer camp at Concordia University Chicago. Both morning and afternoon half-day sessions are available during the camp, which runs from Aug. 7 to Aug. 11.

Concordia-Chicago alumna named Illinois Outstanding Beginning Teacher

Stephanie Coil, a 2016 graduate of Concordia University Chicago, was recognized as one of eight first-year teachers selected as Illinois Outstanding Beginning Teachers. The awards are presented by the Illinois Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (IACTE). Coil received her award from IACTE board member Dr. Barbara O’Donnell at the organization’s Legislative Reception in Springfield, IL.

Concordia-Chicago to offer free Youth Robotics Camp

Concordia University Chicago’s mathematics and computer science department is again offering free Robotics Camps this summer in partnership with Youth Services, Oak Park and River Forest Townships. Camp session 1 will take place July 31 to August 4, and camp session 2 will take place August 7 to 11. The day camps are open to middle and high school students (ages 11-17) residing in Oak Park or River Forest.

Concordia-Chicago computer programming team places second in Midwest competition

A team of Concordia University Chicago undergraduate students recently placed second in the Midwest at a computer programming competition sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The event, held in Detroit, MI, included teams from IEEE Region 4: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Graduating art majors exhibit work at Concordia-Chicago Ferguson Gallery

The Ferguson Art Gallery at Concordia University Chicago presents the final exhibit of the academic year, the Graduating Senior Art Show, from April 10 to May 6. The exhibition is free and open to the public and will feature a wide range of two and three-dimensional works of art in a variety of media, including clay, painting, photography, printmaking, jewelry, artists’ books and graphic design.

Dean of students at Concordia-Chicago named to Thrivent Fellows program

Concordia University Chicago announced that Jeff Hynes, dean of students and vice president for student life and intercollegiate athletics, was named to the Thrivent Fellows program. The rigorous 12-month executive fellowship was established to identify, encourage, develop and equip high-capacity leaders for leadership roles in Lutheran colleges and universities.

Concordia University Chicago to host conference and forum on aging

The Center for Gerontology at Concordia-Chicago and Arbor West Neighbors will host “Resilient Aging – Resilient Living: Cultivating Community Good for All Ages,” a day of education, advocacy and action. The event will take place Tuesday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the Concordia University Chicago campus in River Forest.
