The education programs at Concordia University Chicago have been awarded the coveted Educator Preparation accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The awarding of the prestigious CAEP accreditation continues Concordia University Chicago’s tradition of excellence in educator preparation since 1864, when it was founded as Addison Teachers Seminary.
William Pierros, assistant professor of political science at Concordia University Chicago, has been selected by a faculty committee to be the first-ever recipient of the CUC Innovation Faculty Research Fellowship at Oxford University. He will be traveling early this summer to engage in his research.
The Concordia University Chicago baseball team will make their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III World Series, and this year they will go as the second seed among the eight qualifying teams. The Cougars will be the top seed in their pool, and they will begin their quest for the Division III national title this Friday, May 25 when they take on Swarthmore College (PA).
Concordia University Chicago’s (CUC) mathematics and computer science department is again offering free Robotics Camps this summer in partnership with Youth Services, Oak Park and River Forest Townships. Camp session 1 will take place July 30 to August 3, and camp session 2 will take place August 6 to 10. The day camps are open to middle and high school students (ages 11-17) residing in Oak Park or River Forest.
Dr. Michelle Turner Mangan, associate professor and chair of the Department of Research at Concordia University Chicago, and Susan Harkin, graduate student in CUC’s educational leadership doctoral program, have been appointed to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Review Panel by the state Superintendent of Education, Dr. Tony Smith.
Earlier this month, Concordia University Chicago undergraduate students participated in the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA) Student Symposium at Benedictine University. This included a record 21 computer science presentations, as well as one ecology and two chemistry presentations. The annual symposium is an event where undergraduate students can showcase their research in the sciences, business, humanities and social sciences.
Four faculty members at Concordia University Chicago have been accepted into the 10th Annual Notre Dame Summer Institute, focused on “Teaching Peace in the 21st Century.” The event will take place in June 2018 and is co-sponsored by the University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and the United States Institute of Peace.
The Collective at Concordia University Chicago presents “Man of La Mancha,” the 1964 musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. The production, directed by Stephanie Stroud, will run April 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m., and April 15 and 22 at 3 p.m. at the Madison Street Theatre, 1010 Madison St., Oak Park, IL.
James Connelly, an industrial technology teacher at Morton West High School in Berwyn, IL, was selected as one of 10 Illinois Teacher of the Year finalists for 2018 in recognition of his “outstanding contributions to Illinois Education.” The prestigious designation was narrowed down from 234 initial nominations. Connelly graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a Master of Arts in differentiated instruction in December 2017.
