University Band of Concordia-Chicago presents Fall Family Concert


Concordia University Chicago’s University Band will perform its annual Fall Family Concert on Friday, Sept. 23. Admission is free, and the concert begins at 8 p.m. in the University’s Werner Auditorium.

The program for the evening will feature music that is enjoyable for all ages. Performances will include the world premiere of “Lead the Little Children” by Ben Culli, commissioned by Jennifer Nelson, flute and English horn player in the band, in memory of her mother. In addition, euphonium soloist Bruce Nelson will perform Edwin Franco Goldman’s “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp.”

Other selections for the evening will include “Light Cavalry Overture” by Franz von Suppe, “October” by Eric Whitacre, “Iberian Escapades” by Robert Sheldon, “Rippling Watercolors” by Brian Balmages, “Symphonic Suite from Star Wars: The Force Awakens” by John Williams and “Beyond the Horizon” by Rossano Galante.

The University Band comprises approximately 70 musicians, including residents from surrounding communities as well as Concordia University Chicago students, faculty and staff. Dr. Richard Fischer, distinguished professor of music and the Fred and Jane Wittlinger Endowed Chair for Music Performance, conducts the ensemble. In addition to his work at Concordia-Chicago, he is in demand internationally as a guest conductor, clinician, presenter and adjudicator.

Concordia-Chicago’s campus is located at 7400 Augusta Street, River Forest, IL. Free off-street parking is available in the University’s parking structure, south of Division Street on Bonnie Brae Place. Handicapped-accessible parking is available in the visitors’ lot adjacent to the north side of the University parking structure.
