Concordia-Chicago Center for Literacy's Reading Club builds critical learning skills for children 7 to 17

The Center for Literacy at Concordia University Chicago is again offering a summer session of Reading Club, beginning June 15. By bringing together curious children of various ages and gifted graduate students with a passion for teaching kids, Concordia-Chicago's Center for Language and Literacy is helping young learners succeed.

Reading Club provides children ages 7-17 with the individualized reading support and hands-on learning activities to develop their capabilities as young readers and writers. Since its founding in 2013, dozens of children from Chicago and the nearby suburbs have attended Reading Club and seen improved school performance linked to the program’s structured, personalized instruction and assessment.

“When students feel they’re making progress in reading and writing, they enjoy it more,” said Dr. Veronica Richard, co-director of the Center for Literacy at Concordia University Chicago. “Because we tailor these experiences to each child, many of our students have participated in Reading Club for several years. These students and their families find that ongoing participation has a powerful, long-term impact on reading and writing confidence, motivation and skill development. Small successes lead to bigger ones.”

Reading Club is a three-season program, scheduled to dovetail with the school calendar. The summer program, which will begin June 15, meets for nine weekday sessions. To coordinate flexibly with families’ busy summer schedules, two sessions are offered: morning (10:00-11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (12:30-2 p.m.). During the school year, Reading Club meets once a week after school.

“It’s exciting to work in Reading Club with students of all abilities and see them sharpen their skills,” said Jennifer Smith, a Concordia-Chicago master’s graduate and current K-12 Reading Specialist. “By providing parents and caregivers with daily updates and individualized support documents, we give families the tools to build on the child’s progress during Reading Club.”

The cost for Reading Club is $195 per child. Financial assistance is available.

Reading Club is held on the campus of Concordia University Chicago, 7400 Augusta Street, River Forest, IL.
