Institutions of higher education are more age-diverse than ever with students returning to complete degrees after child-rearing, caregiving, unemployment or other reasons; retooling their knowledge and skills to advance in their careers; exploring second and third career options; or for pursuing personal development and joy of learning. In addition, the faculty and staff members who support student learning are “aging-in-place” in the workplace. Yet, are higher education environments supportive and welcoming for their age-diverse community? The Age Inclusivity Domains of Higher Education (AIDHE) model offers an evidence-based foundation to transform campuses into age-inclusive institutions. Dr. Nina Silverstein will present the model that she and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Boston have developed and describe the seven domains of age-inclusive practices and the evidence-based strategies that emerged from their research.
