In Professor Lettermann’s final days, when he was unresponsive, Schultz recorded the piece and sent it to Lettermann’s wife, Betty. She played it for him and he opened his eyes and maintained a conversation with her.

Oak of Righteousness

Written and dedicated to the memory of son Steven who died of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1985 at the age of 27. Steven had gone to Virginia Commonwealth University on scholarships for trumpet and baseball.
The title (from Isaiah 61:3) was the sermon title at his funeral making reference to the future that never happened for him as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Incorporates the hymn, “Lift High the Cross”, which was sung at the funeral.
The syncopated rhythms in the instrumental introduction are a homage to Steven’s love of jazz. A trumpet solo is also used as a tribute to Steven many talents.
Also arranged for wind symphony.
A CD with a performance by the Jubilate Singers is also included.
