'Godspell' musical back on stage

The popular off-Broadway musical “Godspell” will be performed by the Artists of Concordia Theatre this spring—with a contemporary twist.

The popular musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, retells the parables of the Gospel of St. Matthew through dramatic storytelling, song and dance. Emerging off-Broadway in 1971, “Godspell” brought an all-new perspective of Jesus Christ to the American public.

Adding a twist is new orchestration written by Alex Lacamoire for the 2010 National Touring Company production. The melodies will remain the same, but the pieces will have a more contemporary feel.

Join the Artists of Concordia Theatre as they perform “Prepare Ye,” “Day by Day” and “Turn Back, O Man.” Let the familiar songs echo in your head, as the life of Jesus is explored.

Telling the story of faith, love and friendship, “Godspell” is directed by Julie E. Hinz, Concordia-Chicago managing director. Performances take place April 27 and 28 and May 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bergmann Theatre at Concordia University Chicago, 7400 Augusta St. in River Forest. Free, handicapped-accessible parking is available in the visitors’ lot north of the University parking structure off Bonnie Brae Street.
