Athletic Hall of Fame - Class of 2005

2005 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CLASS ANNOUNCED

Here is a brief look at the 2005 honorees:

Julie (Haertling) Burgess, ’83: Burgess lettered in track and field hockey for four years. Her track career was highlighted by a first-place finish at the State Meet at Wheaton College in 1981. Burgess continues to hold track records in the 800, 1,500 and 10,000 meters, and she formerly held records in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. She is currently the Director of Children’s Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica, Michigan.

Roland Eggerding, ’45: Eggerding earned a total of 11 varsity letters in three years, competing in football, baseball and track, and participating as a yell leader. In 1945, he set a record of 189’7” that still stands today. Upon graduation, Eggerding taught and coached at Racine Lutheran and Walther Lutheran High Schools. He moved on to Lutheran South High School in St. Louis where he served as principal for 28 years before retiring in 1989. Concordia conferred upon him the Spiritus Christus Medallion in 1974.

John Haubenstricker, ’61: Haubenstricker was a four-year letterman in football and baseball and a two-year letterman in basketball. His single-game rushing total of 140 yards stood as a Concordia record for over 30 years. Upon graduation, Haubenstricker joined the coaching ranks, heading up the Cougar baseball team and assisting in football. He also assisted with wrestling for one year before moving up to the head coach’s position for three years. Haubenstricker is a professor emeritus of kinesiology at Michigan State University.

Jack Hein, ’60: Hein lettered in basketball for four years and in track for two. He scored 1,191 points, good for tenth on Concordia’s all-time list, and his 703 career rebounds rank him seventh all-time in that category. Hein taught for 18 years at St. John’s in Elgin, Illinois, later serving there as Director of Evangelism before joining Aid Association for Lutherans and working as a representative for 21 years. He is currently serving with Thrivent, and he was inducted into Thrivent’s Hall of Fame in 2003.

Martin Redlawsk, ’89: Redlawsk was a four-year letterman in football and two-year letterman in basketball. He was a standout wide receiver and contributed greatly to the 1987 team that went 7-2 and won a conference title. Redlawsk was Most Valuable Player for the Illini-Badger Conference that same year. Upon graduation, he had been named an Honorable Mention Pizza Hut All-American twice and held Division III records for average yards per catch for a season and career. Redlawsk currently teaches physical education at Greenfield Park Elementary School in Detroit.

Bruce Tuomi, ’77: Tuomi lettered four years in wrestling and two years in baseball. He was a three-time NAIA national qualifier in wrestling, a two-time NAIA district champion and an NIIC conference champion. Tuomi is among Concordia’s top all-time wrestlers in wins and pins, and his numbers in both categories as a freshman set a school record. He taught and coached at Lutheran East High School in Harper Woods, Michigan from 1976 to 2000 where he earned 14 Metro Conference Coach of the Year honors and two Regional Coach of the Year honors. Tuomi currently serves as athletic director and coaches wrestling and football at Walther Lutheran High School in neighboring Melrose Park.
