English Club

CUC’s English Club presents an opportunity for majors and non-majors alike to come together over good books. We hold on-campus coffee hours, attend campus readings and productions, and travel to literary events happening in Chicago. English Club began in 2011. Check out our ongoing discussions and announcements on Facebook.

In the past, we

  • heard a night of W.B. Yeats’s poetry at the Poetry Foundation in downtown Chicago
  • held a talk-back to the theater department’s productions of Julius Caesar and String
  • travelled throughout the city to see Professor Jayme McGhan’s The Fisherman, An Illiad, and Shakespeare’s Coriolanus and Richard III
  • attended on-campus readings with Rebecca Makkai, Eric Dregni, Billy Lombardo, and John Mann
  • talked with the managing editor, Amanda Morris, of Triquaterly Online
  • attended a reading by Louise Erdrich on her National Book Award winning novel The Round House
  • hold discussions on literature, graduate school, academic conferences, and resume and cover letter writing

For the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year, we are planning to

  • see Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night by the Oak Park Festival Theater (August 24th--the Saturday before school begins!)
  • attend a screening of The Great Gatsby and Midnight in Paris
  • hear a reading by Ana Castillo
  • attend a production of An Iliad
