Bachelor of Arts: Art Education
Are you interested in showing young people the value of art in their lives, and helping them explore and develop their artistic talents? Concordia-Chicago’s Art Education program will teach you a variety of learning styles related to art production, art history, art criticism and art aesthetics, as well as sharpening your skills in studio processes.
Program Overview
Concordia’s College of Education prepares art teacher candidates for early childhood, elementary, middle and secondary level education for both public and Lutheran schools. You may earn a bachelor of arts degree in K-12 art education or a bachelor of arts degree in education: middle/secondary art.
Students learn about art education theory and experience a variety of media in art methods classes. Studio classes further strengthen their art media knowledge. During methods courses, you’ll spend a minimum of 15 hours observing and teaching in classrooms. Hands-on experience in the classroom is a cornerstone of our program. Our 16-week student teaching semester is four weeks longer than most programs, providing graduates with additional experience and confidence.
CUC offers extensive graduate-level programs in education, with options for advanced degrees and additional certificates. All of our education programs exceed the requirements of the Illinois State Certification Board and meet rigorous national accreditation standards.
General Course Information
Candidates pursuing both degree tracks will take an arts method course, and choose remaining methods courses from a prescribed list grouping classes according to art histories, two-dimensional and three-dimensional classes.

Opportunities
Concordia’ Ferguson Gallery displays the art of local and nationally known artists in addition to the work of faculty and students. Art education majors have the experience of exhibiting their work in the Senior Art Show.
Concordia’s campus is just 10 miles from downtown Chicago, giving you quick access to world-class museums such as The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Contemporary Art and DuSable Museum, plus dozens of professional art galleries.
Image, Concordia’s student-run art club, offers a variety of studio activities and field trips to community galleries and museums. Recent activities have included workshops in fabric dyeing, glass making and darkroom photograph printing, in addition to visiting buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
