The Service of Praise and Consecration

On Friday, May 17^that 7:30p.m. Concordia University Chicago will gather in the Chapel of Our Lord as a Christian community for The Service of Praise and Consecration -- Baccalaureate Worship where we will give thanks to our Lord for all our students who are graduating. Students receiving diplomas or certificates in a Church-professional program will present themselves before the Church, consecrating their hearts and hands for the Lord’s work. There will also be a recognition of vocation in which all our graduates will be asked to participate.

These words of encouragement and commitment will acknowledge that all vocations— in the church and the world-- come from our Lord and are lived in response to His love. All graduates will process, and need to line up in the Kretzmann hallway outside the chapel by 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

While those completing our Church-Worker Programs will be receiving certificates and are required to attend, all graduating students are encouraged to participate.

All family and friends are more than welcome to attend.

Join us for a unique opportunity to dialogue with local law enforcement dignitaries and help find a solution to violence.

Every year the Concordia University System Board of Directors designates one Sunday during the month of April for the congregations of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to celebrate Concordia Sunday.

Concordia Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate the ministries of our colleges and universities with the members of all LCMS congregations.

Concordia University Chicago recently invited Dr. Paul Maier to give an apologetics seminar entitled, “The Week that Changed the World,” in which Dr. Maier helped reinforce the historicity of the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord. The resounding effects of those events has been evident throughout the history of this institution. Concordia University Chicago has been and always will remain a university “centered in the gospel of Jesus Christ.” This coming Fall Concordia University Chicago will begin it’s sesquicentennial celebration, thanking God for 100 years in River Forest, and 150 years since the founding of Concordia in Addison, Illinois. This is 150 years of preparing men and women for service and leadership in the church and world.

Please continue to support, pray for, and hold up the ministry of Lutheran higher education on Concordia Sunday April 21, 2013. A special flyer promoting this event is available for downloading here.

The Preparatory and Community Piano Program faculty will perform their annual recital on Saturday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m., at Concordia University Chicago.

Rooted in community outreach, the Preparatory and Community Piano Program at Concordia-Chicago stands out among the hundreds of piano instruction programs in Chicagoland by providing equal doses of repertoire, reading, theory and technique to both its children and adult students. Faculty pianists Billie Howard, Emily Jane Katayama and PCPP founder Craig Sale will perform works by Schumann, Rameau, Bonds and Coleridge-Taylor.

Concordia University Chicago and the Northeastern District of the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD) will host physical education author and expert J.D. Hughes on Saturday, March 9, at its River Forest campus, 7400 Augusta Street.

Hughes’ latest workshop, “New and Improved No Standing Around in My Gym” will maximize skills, participation and fun for K-12 IAHPERD professionals. Dress for physical activity, as Hughes will demonstrate cooperative and exciting new dances and games with academic integration ideas (math, language arts, etc.) for behavior and class management. Teachers will earn Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU).

The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 9, in the Geiseman Gymnasium. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Admission is $25 in advance or $30 at the door; non-IAHPERD members must pay an additional $50 membership fee. “The Selfish Mime: What’s the difference between Clown and Mime?” with Donald Cameron McManus, February 25^th, 4-6pm, Bergmann Theatre

A lot of people think that:

1) Mimes are all French and aren’t funny

2) Clowns are desperately trying to be funny by throwing all social conventions aside resulting in grown adults claiming to have “coulrophobia” (fear of clowns).

What's the real deal? What's a mime? What's a clown?

“The Selfish Mime” is an interactive workshop that confronts these preconceptions through a "faux" lecture-demonstration by Professor Donald McManus of Emory University. The arts of mime and clown are explained in the context of the recently popular phenomenon of MEMES, first hatched by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene (1976). The style, technique and purposes of clown and mime are clarified with the help of volunteers from the workshop participants and everybody blows off steam, while also learning a lot about how mime and clown actually function. The workshop satirizes the tyranny of contemporary theory over art making, specifically comedy, and debunks current fallacies regarding these art forms. Participants are given a crash course in clown logic and learn how to discover the comic nature of mime and the common humanity in clown.

Donald Cameron McManus was born in Montréal, Quebec and has worked professionally as an actor, director, musician and clown in Canada, the U.S., Asia and Europe. His research interests include: comedy, popular entertainment, clown, twentieth-century theatre, foreign plays in translation, scenography, interculturalism, and multi-media performance. Dr. McManus completed a BA at The University of Toronto and was awarded the Donald Matheson Springer Fellowship to pursue graduate studies at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he completed his Doctorate in 1998. His English translation of Man and Gentleman by Eduardo De Filippo was published in Forum Italicum in 2001. His book No Kidding! Clown as Protagonist in Twentieth-Century Theater was published by the University of Delaware Press in 2003 and was selected as an OutstandingAcademic Title in 2004. He collaborated with Josef Glowa to produce the only English-language version of Thomas Bernhard’s play The World-Fixer (published by Ariadne Press in 2005). Professor McManus hasalso published articles for The Journal of Drama Studies, Scenography International, The Routledge Companion to Actors’ Shakespeare and The Routledge Companion to Directors’ Shakespeare. He is currently working on a sequel to No Kidding! entitled No, Seriously! Comedy and Death in Theater and Film.

Margarita Anderson and her family made history and dominated headlines as national media covered their real-life case study in self-help economics in the Black community. The Anderson family lived exclusively off Black business and talent, and bought only Black-made products for an entire year. Their experiment resulted in a landmark study conducted by Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business. Since the completion of their landmark experiment, Margarita has become the leader of a new “smart and sophisticated” movement which identifies and uplifts quality Black businesses, and urges consumers, especially other middle and upper class African Americans, to proactively and publicly support them in order to infuse much needed wealth into economically starved neighborhoods.

Maggie is the author of The Empowerment Experiment (EE), “Our Black Year”, presented by William Morris Entertainment and Public Affairs Books. Maggie is a first-generation Cuban-American, the only American born member of her family. Maggie has a BA in Political Science from Emory University and earned a JD and MBA from the University of Chicago.

Department of Sociology, University of Massachusetts, Boston Mass.

Dr. Leverentz will discuss how women coming out of prison negotiate competing
messages of who they are, who they should be, and how they should live their lives.

Dr. Leverentz uses a symbolic interactionist approach to understand how the women
redefine themselves as desisting ex-offenders, while also attempting to remain
faithful to their other social roles and relationships. Drawing on qualitative interviews
with female ex-prisoners and members of their social networks, Dr. Leverentz analyzes
the narratives they use to describe and define their lives as the women reenter society
from prison and a halfway house stay.

A Contemporary Re-envisionment of Dutch Portraits

Photographer Tom Van Eynde’s “A Contemporary Re-Envisionment of Dutch Portraits” will be exhibited from October 1 through October 28 at the Ferguson Art Gallery at Concordia University Chicago. An artist’s reception will be held on Sunday, October 7, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Tom Van Eynde’s photographs re-envision the portraits of Northern European and Flemish art in particular of the 15th through 17th centuries. While completely modern in appearance, the images draw viewers to a time when portraits were considered status symbols. Van Eynde’s images are large and purposeful, depicting the models staring out at the viewer with the timelessness of their nobility and a sense of power and sophistication. The use of forgotten fashion devices, such as cavalier collar and cuffs become the touchstone that blurs the reality between time and medium.

University Band Family Concert

Concordia University Chicago’s University Band will perform its fall family concert on Sunday, September 30, accompanied by popular commentary from music professor Jean Harrison Bojes

The concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Werner Auditorium/Chapel of Our Lord. Admission is free.

The repertoire includes works by Camille Saint-Saens, Frank Ticheli, Jacques Offenbach, Percy Grainger, Johann Strauss, Ron Nelson, Leroy Anderson, W. F. Wagner, and Carl Strommen.

Conducted by Dr. Richard Fischer, the widely acclaimed University Band is an ensemble of 75 players. Membership includes Concordia students, as well as residents from surrounding communities and greater Chicago area. Literature is drawn from the finest traditional and contemporary repertoire.

In demand internationally as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, he was named to the “A Team” of University Professors by the Chicago Tribune in 1994. He has held positions with numerous professional organizations, including service as the communications director for the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) in preparation for the 1995 conference in Hamamatsu, Japan. Since 1989, Fischer has served as music director for Ballet LeGere’s production of the Nutcracker Ballet. For 18 years, he served as the assistant conductor of the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest.

Bojes, assistant professor of music at Concordia, will provide concert commentary in an ongoing University tradition well received by audiences and ensemble. For more than 10 years, Bojes has volunteered as a “human program” introducing and describing each selection performed, incorporating insights to the music that resonate with a wide range of ages and making Chicago connections when they exist.

John Krebs, Guest Piano Recital

Pianist John Krebs will perform a recital of contemporary American piano music on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel of Our Lord. Admission and parking are free.

A native of Iowa, John Krebs holds degrees in piano performance from Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Maryland. After teaching at Central Missouri State University, Prince George’s Community College, and Luther College, Krebs has been at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas for the past twenty years. At Hendrix, his teaching duties have included music theory, music history and literature, an opera survey course, jazz history, and studio piano. He has also served as chair of both the Hendrix music department and humanities area. An avid collaborative pianist, Krebs has performed in Canada, Germany, Slovenia, Scotland, and Thailand. He has been an active member of Music Teachers National Association at the local, state, and national levels, and in 2011 he was named an MTNA Foundation Fellow.

15th Annual Community Bank 'Makin' Tracks' 5K Run/Walk

The 15th Annual Community Bank “Makin’ Tracks” 5K Run/Walk" will be held Sept. 15, in River Forest. The event is sponsored by the Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest, the River Forest Park District, Concordia University Chicago and Fenwick High School.

Net proceeds benefit the West Suburban Special Recreation Association, which provides recreation services for adults and children with physical impairments, developmental delays, mental disabilities or other disabilities.

The walk/run will begin 8 a.m., on Monroe Street, a half-block south of Division Street. The race route will take runners and walkers on a 3.1-mile course through River Forest’s flat, tree-lined streets before ending on Concordia University Chicago’s Cougar Stadium track.

Diyar Dance Theater Reception and Panel Discussion

A reception and panel discussion with the Diyar Dance Theater will be held on Thursday, May 10th 7:30 pm in the OPRF Room of the Koenecke Community Center.

The Diyar Dance Theatre is a volunteer, Palestiniain, co-ed youth dance troupe that is motivated by the vision of creating a forum for young adults to celebrate Palestinian culture and history through traditional dances. The dance troupe, having just completed their U.S. tour (May 2nd – May 9th), will share their experiences in both Palestine and America. Also, Rami Khader, a CUC alumnus, will be speaking. He is the founder of the Diyar Dance Theatre.

Diyar Dance Theatre is made up of 60 dancers, some of which are Muslim and others Christian. They seek to promote peace and hope among the people of Palestine through dance. They will be performing at eight different locations throughout the Midwest and ending their tour with the reception at Concordia. This will include a brief presentation as well as a Q&A time with some of the dancers, where audience members can learn about the dancer's firsthand experiences growing up in Bethlehem amidst the conflict that exists in Palestine.

Concordia University Chicago’s Black Student Union is sponsoring a daylong visit by the Black History 101 Mobile Museum on Thursday, February 2, starting at 9 a.m. in the Cougar Den of the Koehneke Community Center (KCC). The exhibit will be in place until 5 p.m. that same day.

The Black History 101 Mobile Museum is an innovative traveling tabletop exhibit depicting Black memorabilia spanning from slavery to Hip Hop. The museum has over 5,000 rare treasures among its collection including original documents from historic Black figures whose contributions helped shape the United States. Artifacts in this unparalleled mobile collection represent items from the categories of slavery, the Jim Crow era, music,sports, the Civil Rights and Black Power eras, and popular culture.

Martin Luther King legacy celebration

Join Concordia University Chicago in celebrating the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. The keynote address will be given by Dr. Marc Lamont Hill at 7:00pm in the Chapel of Our Lord.

The address will follow a day of campus activities to commemorate Dr. King's legacy, including a special chapel service and a Campus Awareness Day built upon student organizations and their heritage of service to the community.

Dr. Hill is one of the leading hip-hop generation intellectuals in the country. He is the host of the nationally syndicated television show Our World with Black Enterprise, which airs Sunday mornings on TV One. He has lectured widely and provides regular commentary for media outlets such as NPR, Washington Post, Essence magazine, and The New York Times and has been a regular guest on CNN, MSNBC, and The O’Reilly Factor. In fall 2009, he joined the faculty of Columbia University as associate professor of education at Teachers College.

'Makin' Tracks' 5k Run/Walk on Sept. 17

The 14th Annual Community Bank “Makin’ Tracks” 5K Run/Walk" in River Forest is presented by the Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest, the River Forest Park District, Concordia University Chicago and Fenwick High School.

Net proceeds benefit the West Suburban Special Recreation Association. Proceeds from the walk/run benefit WSSRA providing recreation services for adults and children with physical impairments, developmental delays, mental disabilities or other disabilities.

Start time is 8 a.m., on Monroe Street, a half-block south of Division. The race route will take runners and walkers on a 3.1-mile course through River Forest’s flat, tree-lined streets before ending on Concordia’s Cougar Stadium track.

Registration by mail should be sent to the River Forest Park District at 401 Thatcher Avenue, River Forest, Illinois 60305—postmarked no later than Friday, Sept. 9, 2011.

Walk in registration is available at The Depot, 401 Thatcher Avenue (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday) until Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011. Race day registration will be at the west end of Concordia University Chicago Cougar Stadium from 6:30 a.m.-7:45 a.m.

Adult (18 and up) $25, $30 Race Day

Child (7-17 years) $20, $25 Race Day

Wheelchair Athlete (All Ages) Free

Wheelchair Dash (All Ages) Free

Tot Races (Ages 3-6) Free

*CARA members receive a $3 discount

All paid registrations are able to participate in the 5K Race/Walk and receive a t-shirt, goody bag, and food and water after the event.
